Partial Solar Eclipse Shetland 10 June 2021

A few weeks ago Shetland was the best place in the UK to see the partial extent of the annular solar eclipse that was fully visible in a path from Canada, through Greenland, over the North Pole and ending in northeastern Siberia. Being the most northerly part of Scotland potentially gave us the opportunity for the best view. Ha! That potential was somewhat curtailed by the sort of summer weather common in Shetland, i.e. cloud! Nevertheless, the partial eclipse was visible intermittently for a good period of the event, though the final part was completely obscured from my viewing site.

In Shetland we were fortunate to see about 38% of the sun obscured at maximum eclipse and I was able to photograph the sun and moon very close to this point, though through fairly thick cloud. In fact, on the day I took over 200 images in the hope that I would make a timelapse of the event. Unfortunately, there are some large time gaps (because of frequent thick cloud) and a large number of images were taken close together in periods when the sun was visible so, after processing, aligning, comparing and compiling, only 43 images remain in the finished short movie. View my finished timelapse at the link below. Finally, a huge thanks to yenss (soundcloud.com/yenssmusic) for allowing use of their music for my soundtrack.

This image was taken a few minutes before maximum eclipse at Sumburgh Head.
